The Calabash Fire Corps was started in 2006. The Fire Corps was formed to perform behind the scenes assistance to firefighters. The corps is part of a national program in which the newly recruited volunteers assist local fire departments with non-emergency aid. The fire corps first participated in the Change Your Clock Change Your Battery Program in 2006 and has continued distributing smoke detectors and batteries to the constituents of the fire department ever since. Some batteries are provided by the Energizer Battery Co. Each year as the country switches back to daylight standard time, the Fire Corps sets up a free give-away station to provide the useful tools to anyone who needs them.
The Fire Corps performed a concentrated effort to provide the community with File of Life packets. Funding for this activity came from a grant from the Brunswick Electric Membership Cooperative. Visits were made to property owner association meetings in the various communities within the Fire District. Packets are still available to anyone who wants one. Blank packets are available at Station 1 at 892 Persimmon Road.
Additionally, the Fire Corps helps provide fire safety education, fire fighter rehabilitation services and any other administrative tasks needed by the Department. Members were instrumental in updating and putting together needed information books to assist in the last ISO inspection. They also provide training meals and are ready to serve at any time.
